Vision is one of the best gifts granted to us. We tend to take this for granted. When our eyesight starts giving trouble that is when we realize its value. Like exercise is essential to maintain a healthy body, the same is true for the eyes too. The eyes can be affected by many problems astigmatism, color blindness, cataract, conjunctivitis, glaucoma and various others. Many of them would have to be treated with oral medication, surgeries or other methods like use of external aids such as spectacles and contact lenses. Having said this it is also true that many types of eye problems can be avoided to a large extent by taking care of the eyes and many problems can be corrected with methods used to improve eyesight. Blessed are those who have good Eye Sight. But the others need not worry as eyesight can be improved to a certain extent by following some simple tips. Some eye exercises which would help in distressing the eyes and improve eyesight are given below:
1. Sit in an upright position and rub your palms till they become warm and then hold it against your closed eyes. This will help in relaxing the eyes. Practice deep breathing while doing this exercise. Repeat it a number of times.
2. Rolling your eyes clockwise and anti-clockwise helps the eyes. Remember to blink in between every repetition.
3. Focus on an object close to you for sometime and then look at an object that is beyond it. Now again focus on the object close by. This helps in focusing on a close object, shifting focus and then again focusing close by.
4. People who tend to watch too much of television or those who work long hours using the computer also face eye problems. It is important to look away for sometime every half and hour and focus on some object far off. This reduces the strain on the eyes.
5. A healthy diet also plays an important role in shaping your eyesight. A diet rich in Vitamin A, C and E helps in reducing the chances of contracting cataract or being affected by eye problems like macular degeneration.
If the exercises are done regularly and a balance diet is maintained one can to a large extent maintain good eyesight and improve Eye Sight that has just started giving trouble. The exercises mentioned do not consume much time and can be accommodated in any busy schedule. A little time spared for your eyes will go a long way in having good eyesight.
The cornea is the outer most transparent portion of the eye which works mostly as a protective shield to the iris and pupil. A cut or scratch in the cornea is known as an abrasion. Corneal Abrasion can happen due to various reasons such as scratch from fingernails, foreign objects such as metal shavings or dirt affecting the eyes, overexposure to UV rays, wearing contact lenses for long period of time, brushes used for makeup and many such similar factors can affect the cornea.
But the cornea usually takes care of small abrasions on its own. The healthy cells take necessary action and slide themselves over and cover the injured portion so as to avoid any further damage to the cornea and prevent any kind of infection that is likely to affect the eye. Certain things can be done at home itself so as to avoid corneal damage.
1. Rinse your eye well with water.
2. Keep the eyes closed for sometime. Do not rub.
3. Artificial lubricants that make your eyes tear are good.
4. Over the counter medicines for pain would help but if the pain persists even after one dose it is best to consult a doctor.
But in case the abrasion is too deep, the healing process takes much longer and in the meantime the person would experience symptoms like pain, blurring of vision, spasm in the eye, redness of the eyes, tearing and also extreme sensitivity to light. If this happens then one should not wait for the cornea to heal on its own but seek professional help. Antibiotics and cycloplegics would be used to treat the problem. Seeking medical help would be the solution when you experience eye pain without any significant problem, blurring or loss of vision and such other problems. Sometimes the wound can be so bad that a corneal transplant can be the only solution.
Opthalmoscopes are used to determine corneal abrasions but a better option would be slit lamp microscopes which give a more magnified view of the problem. Evaluation can be better with the slit lamp microscope. It is important to let the doctor know all the treatment and medication that has been taken in advance. Corneal Abrasions can happen to anyone anytime but those who are involved in work such as welding and contact lens wearers are more at risk. One can take precautionary measures at times. Wherever possible it is important that the eyes are shielded well. In case a corneal abrasion still happens seek medical help at the earliest so that the vision is not affected.
The cornea can be said to be a very important part of the eye. It is located in the front portion of the eye and is transparent. The cornea provides a wrap for the anterior camber, iris and the pupil. It works as a protective shield and does not let germs and other harmful particles affect the eyes. It also controls the penetration of light and helps in focusing. It along with the lens is responsible for refracting light and helps the eye focus. The Cornea is accountable for most of the (approximately 2/3rds) optical power of the eye. The cornea is very sensitive because of the unmyelinated nerve ending. It is sensitive not only to touch but also to chemicals and temperature. The reflex action can be seen when it is touched as it involuntarily causes the eyelid to close. It is probably the most sensitive tissue in the human body. A very interesting fact about the cornea is the absence of blood vessels. Because it is absolutely essential that the cornea remains transparent, the blood vessels are absent. Another interesting fact is that the cornea has 5 layers. Let us briefly look at the 5 layers of the cornea:
1. Corneal Epithelium: is a tissue layer which is multicellular. They grow rapidly and the cells are easily regenerated. This layer stays moist due to tears.
2. Bowman’s Layer: is a very strong layer in the cornea. It provides a protection to the corneal stroma. The layer is 8-14 microns in thickness.
3. Corneal Stroma: this is the middle layer of the cornea. This is probably the thickest part of the cornea as 90% of the thickness is that of the stroma. It is made up of type 1 collagen fibrils having close to 200 layers.
4. Descemet’s Membrane: is a very thin layer that functions as a customized base membrane of the corneal endothelium.
5. Corneal Endothelium: is the layer which regulates the flow of fluid and solute between 2 compartments i.e. the corneal stroma and the aqueous.
In refractive surgeries, the corneal shape is changed due to which the person can avoid using corrective lenses. Most advanced techniques use lasers which help in reshaping the cornea.
Vision loss is one of the greatest losses that one can suffer. Retinal damage is one of the leading causes of vision loss. The retina is a tissue that is multi layered and which is present at the rear of the eye. It is about 0.5mm in thickness. The Retina can be affected with various kinds of problems and the treatment varies depending upon the nature of the problem. Retinal surgery comes as a boon to many who are bordering on losing their precious vision. But this does not necessarily mean that every patient’s original vision would be restored. Some would have to bear with the loss of partial vision for life.
Researchers are also contemplating and studying retinal transplant as an option to restore lost vision. Studies have shown encouraging results and this could soon be a reality. Electronic retinas have also been considered and researchers are trying out the benefits of this type of retina to help patients get better vision. Retina is a nerve tissue and damage to the retina can lead to many eye problems. Macular degeneration and Retinitis Pigmentosa are common age related problems. This can lead to blindness if not treated in time. Degenerative diseases are not the only ones that affect the retina and thereby vision. The retina can also be affected due to malnutrition. A lack of Vitamin A in ones diet can at a later stage be the cause for nightblindness.
The retina can be said to be a very crucial part of the eye and any sort of problem with the retina can lead to vision loss if not treated on time. Surgery can help patients with retinal problems and this can help in slowing down the Vision loss process. The retina is quite vulnerable to damage by the free radicals. Diseases that affect the retina are supposed to be the leading cause of loss of vision. The rods and cones which help in sensing the light get affected and this in turn makes the patient unable to see.
Millions of patients the world over are affected by retinal problems. Over the years the damage that is inflicted upon the retina is unfathomable. This leads to many a problem at a later stage and finally ends up in Vision loss. The eyes have to taken care of well for it has to last a lifetime and an eye specialist needs to be consulted regularly so as to arrest any problem at the earliest.
